If you haven’t read Inside Affairs, beware of spoilers ! Breaking News takes us right where it left us, after the shooting at the awards. Sean has been stabbed by the stalker, while he succeeded in killing him. He is taken to the hospital, along with a terrified Xander. Sean’s family is notified, and Bailey and Henry come over to the hospital. Xander lies about the truth of their relationship and as I said in my previous review, I think this is going to be a major issue for our two protagonists. As Sean wakes up, someone has to take care of him for his recovery and under the pretence of giving back to him, Xander volunteer for the job instead of Bailey and Henri. We saw Henri just for a couple of chapters but I am sure he sensed the shift in Sean and Xander’s relationship. He is really observant, so it would be a surprise for me if he didn’t see anything. He truly might be the key for Bailey to accept his brother and his best friend (former boyfriend as well) dating.
We get to see a very different side of Xander and Sean : they take care of each other, it is very tender. Xander takes care of Sean’s physical wounds while Sean’s trying to help Xander accept the help he needs to treat his PTSD and for him to get rid of his guilt over Sean’s being shot. Don’t get me wrong, they are still attracted to each other but this book was more about intimacy, not about sex for sex. When they sleep together for the first time, it is hot as hell but more tender than anything because it is the first time for Sean with a man. He doesn’t want to make mistakes, he wants to make it special for Xander despite them hardly being virgins. But I think Sean’s not confident as Xander’s plenty of experience. But Xander doesn’t car : as long as t is with Sean, it will feel amazing and special. It truly shows than behind his gruff exterior, Sean is really sweet without his armour. And the fact that I loved the most is that they don't change for each other, they are still like the sun and the moon : a city mouse vs a country mouse. But it works : they complete each other.
Talking about his armour, we get to see why he got it in the first place. Ella’s explored his past with brio, showing us a bright contrast between Bailey and Sean’s relationships with their father. They don't have the same experience at all. I want to know more about Sean’s messed up relation with his father.
There are few points that are going to challenge our heroes : first, Sean’s position in the CPD. Now that he is in a gay relationship, how will he navigate his job ? Moreover, how to navigate his job when Xander saw how dangerous it was close and personal, forever scared of Sean dying ? And how will they balance their relationship with their professional life ? They both have time-demanding jobs, so is one of them going to quit is job ?
Their relationship evolved mostly in enclosed places so it is for me one of the main question Ella has to answer in the last volume of the trilogy is how Sean and Xander will navigate their relationship in the world especially inside their families, and seeing how this book ended they are in for a tough road. But I have no doubt a happy ending is waiting those two. I can’t wait for September to come, to read the last instalment of this amazing series.
